Tres Cuartos del Camino al Amor By Leland Thomas Faegre
|
'Tres Cuartos del Camino al Amor'
| Description:
Conceived in a 3/4 time signature, the syncopation
nonetheless makes it feel more like 4/4. The basic introductory piano motif
is stylistically salsa, with Flamenco guitar, timbales and guero, maracas,
bongos and congas, cowbell and various sundry percussion filling in the
holes. I added a trumpet section, Santanaesque lead guitar, a drum
kit and bass guitar that completes the ambience for the production and
ihay caramba! Muy muy caliente...
Story Behind the Music:
I had only the vaguest of an outline as I began this work.
Challenged by the genre, arrangement and production itself, I answered the
call from Janet Fisher for a "HOT, uptempo, (authentic) Salsa, Bossa Nova and
"Rio" type of instrumental music," and it became a labor of love with the
percussion parts taking up most of the studio time. Working in the 'live
room' at
'Down to Hear Productions' I recorded
the Flamenco parts and then went immediately to
Collinator Studios to lay down the
electric guitar parts, finishing the production the following day. It was a
very quick deadline and it seemed as though it would never come. Would you
like chips with this? |

"...the mixing of obviously traditional instruments with modern and
sometimes unexpected instrumentation is what makes Leland's tracks so
great. He takes what some people consider to be simple "folk" music or
instruments and blends them into a tapestry of musical artistry that is a
pleasure every time." ---Andy, The Eclectic Connection |

Song: Tres Cuartos del Camino al Amor
| I was getting a bit heavy on the rock in the playlist and I might be accused of being a little heavy on the Faegre in my selections, but I needed something to really break things up and this does it in spades. I have featured several world numbers from Leland and each of them has had a different flavor. But it seems that no matter what he puts his hand to, it comes out just right - evoking the spirit and following the musical traditions of the region no matter where it is. One of these days, maybe I'll get back to his playlist of other fine music, but this latest number fit just right in the playlist for every reason. |

| "I
thought the arrangement was good and the musicianship excellent...Your
work always displays a high level of musicianship and compositional
expertise...your work is always extremely well conceived and executed. Congratulations...!" ---Taxi, November 28, 2005 "...I am always impressed with your talent and ability to generate interesting and authentic sounds and unusual and engaging arrangements..." ---Taxi, August 16, 2006 "...This is one of your most impressive pieces -- terrific arrangement and great use of synths and samples...It's really very well done..." ---Taxi, September, 5, 2006 "This song has a very unusual melodic structure; the rhythms are very frenetic and polyphonic. That said, the song has an interesting personality and vibe, and it generates a lot of heat. The electronic elements and the organic elements are well balanced and it sounds as if there are real musicians present (if only via digital transport.) It's careening, over the top rhythmic feel (where the drummer sounds like he's falling down a flight of stairs!) makes for interesting listening." ---Taxi, October, 17, 2006 "...The piano montuno is cool; you have a lot of cool sounds...Good ideas and musicianship..." ---Taxi, September 5, 2008 |
